Having just watched the newest episode of Lower Decks and hearing Purple Data say the line “that seems like a missed opportunity when purple is an option” (in reference to the enterprise’s color) all I can think about now is Donnie wholeheartedly agreeing.

Hi, I'm Kat. This is my writing blog- currently it's still under construction so please excuse how empty it is. I decided I needed a dedicated space to put my writing so it doesn't get buried on my main blog where I mostly just reblog things I like. I'm also hoping that having this blog will help me stay motivated to keep writing and give me a way to see myself grow as a writer. I'm going to be posting a mix of fan fiction, original fiction, and non-fiction. As this blog grows this pinned post will be used for navigation.

Public Domain cartoon characters from Golden Age comic books

Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit going (mostly) into the public domain is a pretty big deal. In the next ten years a lot of animation from the 1930s will wind up in the hands of all artists who want to use them. But did you know there's a huge amount of cartoon characters from the 1940s that are totally free to use? It isn't just cartoons that starred on the silver screen that have fallen out of copyright. (Of course, I'm using the word "cartoon" somewhat loosely...)

See, when US copyright law was revised in 1976 and went into effect in 1978, works created before 1964 were required to have their copyright renewed before the end of 1980, or else they would become public domain. Hundreds if not thousands of Hollywood movies and other types of media had been made by studios and publishing companies that went bankrupt and were completely dissolved decades prior to this new law. This included the cartoons made by studios such as Bray, Van Beuren, and many others- but it also included comic books.

If you weren't a big comic book company like DC or Marvel, chances are you shuttered your doors sometime in the 1950s or early 1960s. And during the 1940s, with the rise in popularity of Looney Tunes, Woody Woodpecker, Tom and Jerry, and Droopy, comic book publishers were printing tons and tons of comic books starring wacky, slapstick-oriented animal characters. Most of these titles went out of copyright, and there are lots of fun and interesting characters to be found in them.

One of the most historically notable is Supermouse. When the first Mighty Mouse cartoon premiered, he was called Supermouse, but what they didn't know was that Pines comics had already taken the name, and successfully sued for copyright infringement even though they were both parodies of Superman.

One of the most interesting titles I've come across is Funny Films. The conceit of the series is that these are actually cartoons you can watch in a movie theater, except it's a comic book. A bit confusing, I know.

The end result is a series of fourth wall breaks so absolutely thorough in their scope that the fourth wall really doesn't exist anymore, barring actually jumping out of the page (or your computer screen) and blowing up your living room. They talk to the audience, jump out of the screen, and even show up late for the cartoon to start. This is of course the bookends to a whole bunch of slapstick gags and goofy dialogue.

Another interesting series, especially if you're a fan of Archie, is Hi-Jinx. They basically took the premise of teeny-boppers in high school and made them into funny animals. Most of the stories have something to do with swing music and dancing.

And although they're crudely drawn, one of the more unique character concepts is Pussy Katnip, found in various titles scattered across the mid-1940s, usually buried amongst a bunch of more normal stories with ordinary human characters. Pussy Katnip looks like one of your classic film noir glamorous beauties, except she's an anthropomorphic cat. Think Minerva Mink but feline. She may appear to be a femme fatale at first, but she's actually a crimefighter. To do this she chugs a mysterious beverage that gives her enhanced strength and intelligence. She's sort of a mystery-solving superhero.

Her appearances are random and kind of hard to find. Often these comics, especially in the early '40s, remind me of the artwork of underground comics of the '70s- not quite rubberhose, not quite Looney Tunes. The kind of thing you might find on a punkabilly album cover.

And ocassionally you'll come across characters with a suspiciously familiar name:

One thing to watch out for is the occasional Donald Duck knock-off, some more obvious than others.

So if you're like me and you're too impatient to wait for Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck to fall out of copyright, and you want to do something more unusual and unexpected, there are dozens and dozens of comic books with silly, wacky characters that can be utilized in your own original stories, cartoons, and what have you- and you can monetize them too!

Sylvester: Don't slander Scuttle, Katnipp, He brings the drinks while you... actually, what so you successfully that isn't bullying? Answer quickly.

Actually yeah it definitely seems like Donnie’s brothers freak out about his soft shell way more than he does. Even in the movie when his battle shell gets broken Mikey is the one who is way more concerned that Donnie is “exposed” and is dragging him off to find shelter, meanwhile Donnie’s priority is clearly to protect Mikey in that moment. He even stops running for a second to make sure Mikey gets ahead of him and into the TurtleTank (which yeah a good amount of that is definitely Big Brother Instinct™️ but still, Donnie himself never once mentions or shows that he’s worried about being without his battle shell)

I feel like Donnie is a lot more casual in the use of his battle shells than his brothers are. They almost seem to treat it like it’s a part of him like their own shells are and they seem mostly concerned with its function as armor for Donnie, where Donnie himself seems to see the shells more like tools and extensions of himself than necessarily a part of him. One of my favorite instances of this comes up in “Mascot Melee” where Donnie just casually switches out battle shells mid battle. He’s using the shells to adapt to the situation and using what will give him an advantage in the fight, if it was just about protecting his spine then the shells wouldn’t have cool features like a DJ turntable or spider legs for increased mobility (or storing iced beverages)

I mean heck, he destroys them pretty casually in “Insane in the Mama Train” and then he has a lot of bad ass moments in that episode. I really like the idea that the battle shells came around more to ease his brothers’ minds more than anything but then Donnie decided to get more creative with their functions and uses and that’s why he has multiples of them and not just one.

I like to think that Donnie, being a smart boy, found out pretty quickly that there is nothing wrong with his shell. It’s supposed to be like that and it’s not worse.

But try to explain it to his brothers.

Originally he started wearing protection so they would stop treating him like he would fall apart from any push. Later it became handy with all the gadgets he could stuff in.

I want a hunger games miniseries remake done by showtime. Make it as dark and gritty as the books were. Like, remember back in the 2010s how photoshopped Katniss was in the promos? Remember all the makeup brands doing collabs so You, Too! Can Look Like a Tribute! A Citizen Of Panem!!!! Look Like Effie Trinket!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone made jokes about how when peeta and katniss get together their ship name is peeniss. But how katnip actually L O V E S gale. A HEMSWORTH. there was no actual like emphasis on the fact that these are literally children. Slaying. Each other. Like victors, who were sixteen at the MOST had to resort to under-the-table sex work, and were abused by adult predators who were willing to put up insane amounts of money to take advantage of small, traumatized children. But we talked about the love triangle!!!! The braids!!!!! Omg peeniss!! Girl boss on fire!!!!

No. We need a miniseries that do the books justice and show how terrifying they are. I need the series to gut me like a fish the same way the books do.

In our new house I live in what used to be the garage (the previous owners turned it into a bedroom) but there’s no way in and out of the room from inside the house, so my only exit/entrance is a door that leads to our back patio. There’s also, unfortunately for me, no way to turn off the patio light from inside my room, meaning I have to turn it off from inside the house and then sprint to the shining beacon that is my bedroom window and lock my bedroom door behind me before the backyard serial killers™️ get me.
